13 Mar What is Hernia, and how does it affect bowel movements?
A hernia is a medical condition in which a fatty tissue or organ pushes or squeezes through a weak spot in surrounding connective tissue or muscle. Hernia generally occurs between our hips and chest. It may also happen at the groin or upper thigh area. The Hernia is not a fatal health condition. But the disease itself is excruciating. It leads to a lot of discomforts. It does not go away on its own. You need to take proper medications or undergo surgery to get rid of hernia.
Types of Hernia:
There are quite a few types of Hernia which you need to be aware of:
- Inguinal Hernia Umbilical Hernia
- Ventral Hernia
- Hiatal Hernia
A hernia does affect our bowel movement. But not every Hernia can do so. If you are suffering from Inguinal Hernia, it will have a profound impact on your bowel movements.
This is the most common type of hernia. This takes place when your intestines tend to squeeze through a weak spot in the lower abdominal wall. Mostly, men suffer from this type of hernia.
The resulting bulge will be extremely painful. Whenever you cough, lift a heavy object or bend over, you will feel intense pain.
Symptoms of Inguinal Hernia:
Keep a check on the following symptoms if you want to prevent inguinal hernia:
- Difficulty in bowel movement
- Burning sensation or pain in the bulge area.
- The bulge on either side of the pubic bone. This bulge gets all the more apparent when you stand up or cough or put strain.
- Pain or swelling in the testicles.
- Heaviness or dragging sensation in your groin
- Feeling extreme pressure or weakness in your groin area.
If you are unable to push the hernia back inside, then the contents of the hernia will remain trapped onto the abdominal wall. This may lead to obstruction of blood flow to the trapped tissues. If you do not visit your doctor, then this situation may prove to be quite fatal for your health. You may always feel nauseated. Your pain will intensify all of a sudden. The bulge may appear purplish or reddish or even blackish. The most challenging part is that you will feel extreme discomfort in passing bowels. It may lead to constipation. This will further worsen the situation as you will need to put strain while passing stool. Even after passing stool, you may feel the urge to go to the toilet again.
